I was Chair of the Albemarle County Board of Equalization for 5 years. The Equalization Board does public hearings for tax assessment appeals. While I was Chair there was a succession in Assessors. There were two Revalidations of Land Use assessments. The County was successful in a suit against the County when a litigant challenged their tax assessment in which I represented the BOE. Most appeals applicants had never been to BOE hearings, and it was rewarding to support nervous county residents who arrived with concerns for due process, and were able to leave with a feeling that the system is sound.
